Expanded swimming timetable for Moseley Road Baths now long-term future is secure

Written by on November 18, 2018

MOSELEY Road Baths has announced it is expanding its swimming timetable, just six months after the venue’s long-term future was secured.

Thanks to the enthusiastic support of local people and funding from National Lottery Awards for All, volunteer lifeguards, swim teachers and receptionists have been trained to join the dedicated team of staff.

It means the baths can now open for longer and offer a new activity.

In response to feedback there will be more women only swimming sessions and there is a second session for disabled swimmers.

Older people can also take part in Be Active Sessions, new equipment with funding from Veolia will see splash sessions introduced for Sunday mornings and there will be more early morning swims.

There will also be a pre-work Aqua-Aerobics class and a pre-natal session on Sundays so mums-to-be can undertake gentle exercise in the warm pool.

The extra sessions will begin tomorrow (Monday).

Ruth Hayden, one of the lifeguards now volunteering at Moseley Road Baths , said she thoroughly enjoyed her training course and has gained confidence from her experience.

“I have learned a great deal so my advice is to try it and find new strengths and skills! It’s very much an ongoing learning process but teaches excellent skills not just for pool safety but for all aspects of life.”

Since taking over running of the baths in April 2018, Moseley Road Baths CIO (Charitable incorporated organisation) has successfully recruited and trained 40 volunteers as part of an ongoing mission to develop a sustainable and community led service for swimmers.

The CIO has said it would continue to engage and consult with the local community over the next few months on the plans to extend its range of activities in the future.

Karen Leach, chair of Moseley Road Baths CIO, said she was proud of the work carried out by trustees, staff and volunteers over the past seven months.

“Taking over the operation of swimming at this much-loved Grade II listed Edwardian pool was daunting and it’s been a challenge for all of us!

“We’ve been working hard to recruit a fantastic team of volunteers and to make visiting Moseley Road Baths a welcoming and friendly experience and could not have achieved as much as we have without their commitment and dedication.”
