Blaze breaks out at disused quarry in Rubery

FOUR fire engines and 18 firefighters are currently battling a blaze at a disused quarry in Rubery.

West Midlands Fire Service was called at 1.46pm about the incident which has happened on land off Cock Hil Lane.

Firefighters estimate the blaze had spread to an area of 1,200metres x 100metres, taking out trees and shrubs.

Crews from Northfield, Woodgate Valley, Kings Norton and a fire response vehicle (also from Northfield) are in attendance.

Five main water jets and a hose reel jet are being used to battle the blaze and firefighters are on the ground with beaters – a technique often used to put out grass fires.

A West Midlands Fire Service spokesperson said good progress was being made but did not yet know how long it would take to put the fire out.

Reports on social media said the smoke could be seen as far away as Merry Hill.
